Returns to Abyei expected to surge: A substantial increase of returns is expected in the time leading up to the election and referendum. Tensions of returnees, the majority expected to be Dinka Ngok, with Misseriya pastoralists as well as critical limitations of Abyei area to provide for more than 10,000 returnees need to be taken into account urgently. Information on returns to Abyei should be shared as soon as possible for the attention of all partners in Abyei.

On 13 January, the UN State Team (UNST) meeting discussed the drought situation in the Blue Nile State and measures taken by WASH partners, as well as MTDF strategies and projects in the area. JICA (Japanese International Cooperation) also presented updates on their activities.

The Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) pools donor contributions into a single funding
mechanism intended to address Sudan’s critical humanitarian needs. Managed by the UN
Humanitarian Coordinator, the Fund offers participants an opportunity to fulfil the principles of
good humanitarian donorship through the provision of rapid, flexible support for priority needs,
irrespective of other considerations.
